What separates successful cohousing groups from those that fail to launch?

The Cohousing movement in the U.S. started about 30 years ago. Since then, only around 160 communities have been built, but hundreds of other initiatives have started and failed. What separates those that fail from those that succeed?

Most groups drastically underestimate the importance of marketing their development. In fact, as Katie McCamant, the queen of the of the cohousing movement in the U.S. remarks, a group that wants to succeed should make "marketing their number one priority".
For most potential buyers, Cohousing is a radical departure from the standard single family home development pattern. To break free, potential buyers need more than just a house - they need community. Specifically, a community they can trust enough to undertake the adventure of living together.

Buyers need to feel known. And a good marketing plan will make it possible for you to get to know your potential new neighbors just as much as it will help them get to know you.
